Technorati and the size of the blogosphere: it can’t be THAT hard to figure out, surely?!
I wish I could agree with you, but the pendulum in Australia on raising children has swung so far to the 'permissive' side that by the age of 15 most Aussie teenagers are a law unto themselves.
Egged on by drugs and alcohol, they do what they want, when they want, and parents are powerless to stop them, no matter what restrictions they might place upon them.
But complete wankers are complete wankers and will always be so, no matter what country they hail from. USA, Britain, mainland Europe -- all can boast a fair number of complete idiots who love 'hanging tough' for the media and their mates at the expense of the ones who have loved them and invested so much time and energy into them.
I think his parents are between a rock and a hard place -- they want to let the whole neighbourhood know they are ashamed and very sorry for their son's behaviour, that they condemn it most strongly. They are also still loving him (what else can they do?) but letting him hang himself so he can learn his own much-needed lessons.
My stepson and his mates 'hang tough' just like Corey, but at least my stepson wouldn't let anything like this happen and would be absolutely mortified at even one tenth of the damage Corey caused.
Don't forget, whilst individually and on their own these boys (like my stepson's mates) are really lovely and polite kids who have wandered off the track a bit but who are inherently good, when you get them in a pack they collectively share the one brain cell. Add alcohol and drugs to this one neuron and all manner of stupidity results.
I truly feel for his parents. Personally, I'd never speak to the little shit ever again until he'd shown true remorse, apologised to every neighbour individually, apologised to the police, and got a job and started paying back the $20k bill.
